BACKGROUND:

John Winchester was born- hilariously- in 1954 in Normal, IL to Henry and Millie Winchester. Henry was a member of a secret society called the Men of Letters. They were dedicated academics in all things supernatural, magical, and demonic. In 1958, Henry disappeared to and died in the far future while being pursued by a demon, but all that John knew was his father left him and his mother all alone.

Sometime between then and 1973 he met his future wife, Mary, in Lawrence, Kansas. They hated each other at first John being a guy from the wrong side of the tracks and Mary being pretty average- other than the fact that the Campbells were secretly a family of monster hunters. Unfortunately for both Mary and John, the heavens and all its angels preordained that they had to bring into the world the earthly human vessels for the angels Lucifer and Michael, so they could battle and begin the Apocalypse. Displeased that their plans were going to slow, the angels had a cupid hit them both, and they fell deeply in love

However, this was all during the Vietnam War, and as a perfectly healthy and fit young man, John saw fit to go to war too. It’s not explicitly stated in canon, but from what we know about John’s company and his discharge date, he would have had to drop out of school at around 17 to enlist in the Marines. He served in the 2nd Battalion 1st Marines, and though by the time he’d finished boot camp they were close to being pulled from action, he spent at least thirty days in country. After being discharged, John returned to Kansas to marry Mary. However, the night he was to propose, Mary’s father was possessed by a demon named Azazel looking to lure Mary into a contract with him. The demon killed John and forced a trade for his life back. Of course, he had no memory off it. All John knew was that very suddenly both of Mary’s parents were dead and they were very alone in the world.

By 1983 John and Mary were married ten years with two boys, but on November 2nd 1983, things changed forever While he was asleep, a demon killed his wives and set fire to the house. He barely made it out with his infant and toddler sons, and from that moment on started on a revenge fueled rampage that lasted 20 years. He kept on the road in a that time, never staying long enough in one place for fear of his children being killed or taken by the demon that killed their mother. Over the years he grew to be a fierce and well renowned hunter, respected in the hunter world, but his family life suffered. By 2001 his son Sam had left for college and their relationship was damaged deeply. It took his disappearance in 2005 for his son, aided by his eldest, Dean, to come back into their world. But by then, John was hot on the trail of the demon that killed Mary, and he had to disappear lest it hurt his children.

PERSONALITY:

John is, at his very core, a deeply emotional individual. His number one driving force, the thing that fuels his revenge and keeps him getting out of the bed every morning is the love he has for his wife, Mary. Part of this love is based in the cupid’s influence, a supernatural bond that is designed to never break, but it's a true, actual love as well. Mary was his reason for being, the bright spot in his life after he witnessed a hell of a lot of horror in Vietnam, and to him she had represented all the good in the world. He knows that he can never have her back (and indeed, that's the most painful thing of all), but the least he can do is make sure no one else suffers the kind of loss he has by killing any and all monsters he can, all while tracking down the thing that did her in.

Before his wife’s untimely death, John was just a regular middle class family man. Despite what he saw and experienced during Vietnam, he was able to keep a fairly positive outlook on life and not let his time in the service color his life. He did come away with a sort of need to protect others, having been awarded the Bronze Star for bravery during his time in the army. He was kind and openly friendly, the kind of person who’d be willing to buy coffee for a hungover stranger in need. Most of all, he was head over heels in love with Mary. And so John’s number one driving force, the thing that fuels his revenge and keeps him getting out of the bed every morning is the love he has for his wife, Mary.

Mary’s death fundamentally changed John him in countless ways. He became emotionally distant from everyone, including his children, Sam and Dean. Instead, he focused every fiber of his being on revenge for her murder. He began seeing threats everywhere, and he not only distanced himself, but Sam and Dean, from the world. Part of what makes John such an exceptional hunter is his determination (bordering on obsession) to finish the job. Once he gets on a hunt, all of his attention is focused onto it. Everything else, people, money, and occasionally his children, takes a back seat until he sees it to the end. The focus is so intense that he often disappears without word for weeks on end, only coming up for air after he’s finished the job. It speaks to a lot of similarities between himself and his father; an exceptional intelligence, but instead utilized in a physical, problem solving way rather than through book smarts. In addition to all of these gifts, John is a deeply talented marksman, and even received the USMC's highest award for marksmanship when he was in the army as a teenager.

John served in Vietnam as a Marine, and that kind of hardass alpha male mentality has stayed with him all these years. He rarely seeks assistance from anyone and probably won’t take it if offered. In the unlikely event that he does have help from someone (for a hunt, or hustling pool), he’s the one in charge at all times, no questions asked. He answers to absolutely no one but himself, and he won’t hesitate to bust heads if someone challenges him. No matter who he’s butting heads with, be it against his friends or his own children he, refuses to back down. It’s lost him several friends over the years, alienated him from others, and gained him quite a few enemies. Though, no falling out has been so severe that the other person hasn’t been willing to help out John or his children when they were in danger, particularly when their lives were on the line. It seems that as abrasive as John is, he inspires some kind of reluctant fondness or loyalty in people that they can’t seem to shake.

As a father, John fails miserably. He took a distant, militaristic approach to raising Dean and Sam, treating them like soldiers under his command. He expected (still expects, actually) them to blindly obey every order he gave them, trained them like soldiers and even taught them how to handle weapons while still in elementary school. He tried to keep the truth about monsters and the like from Sam, at least, for as long as he could. However, John had no qualms with throwing him right into the fray after he learned the truth at age nine. Early on, John would leave the boys with other people for extended periods of time while he would go on hunts, usually a babysitter, but a lot of the time it would be another person with hunting experience. After he thought they were old enough (the keyword here being ‘thought’), he began leaving the two alone, essentially forcing Dean to become a parent to Sam. He believed, at the time, it was the only way to keep them safe in the dangerous, uncertain world he was forcing them into.

He rarely shows Dean and Sam anything that could normally be considered parental affection. It's even rarer that he openly praises them. He felt it was never really conducive to the militaristic lifestyle they lived. It's only in times of great distress, namely under the threat of death, that he's willing to do anything outwardly paternal. The same can be said for his emotions in general. He’s more willing to convey how he’s feeling to his children, crying even, but he’ll hold back or close himself off if he feels it’s necessary to the situation.

It’s not to say that John doesn’t care for his kids. He does, probably more than anyone knows. He’s willing to do anything, even straight up murder, to keep Sam and Dean safe. Unfortunately, this makes them his greatest weakness. He’ll still take risks even when he knows his sons can handle whatever they’re dealing with. His concern for their safety clouds his judgment, and it’s caused him to play right into the bad guys’ hands on more than one occasion. He does regret the way he raised them, as evidenced by his desperate attempts to reconcile with them on his deathbed. He’s well aware what he did was wrong, and it eats at him constantly. But he also knows that mistakes and damage he did is permanent, and there’s no other way to fix it besides owning up to his errors and apologies.

POWER:

Power Void
Non-physical powers will be unable to affect John in any way. Powers like telekinesis, magic, telepathy, etc have no effect on him, though if a power is influenced on an outside object and directed at him (a big ol boulder thrown his way), it would work. Additionally, John is able to temporarily short our someone’s powers through physical contact. The effect does not linger and only lasts as long as contact is maintained

Supernatural Sense
John has the ability to sense supernatural powers and abilities in people, distinguishing from true humans and monsters. Upon sight he is able to sense if: a person is human, what kind of creature they are if not human, and also that person is imbued with magical powers. Note that this does not tell him if a human has porter given powers, just if a person has powers magic in nature (ex: witches). John isn't able to tell this from over voice or by video/photo, only through face to face sight.

Item: The Colt
In addition to his newfound powers, John will be coming into the game with the Colt, an antique Colt .45 that is rumored in universe to have the ability to kill any monster, including demons. In reality, it can kill anything but five creatures in the universe (Lucifer, and four others, assumed to be God and the three remaining archangels) . The gun only has four bullets left, and after that the gun will be rendered effectively useless (except for just being able to kill normal people; it’s a gun, after all). There is a way to create more magic bullets for the Colt, but John has no idea how to make them and probably would not be able to on his own.

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[The voice post comes across with a little difficulty, too much interference in the background to make it totally clear. It’s like the person on the other end has no clue how to operate his phone, or at least is belligerent about not learning. Sounds belligerent about having to make a post, come to think of it.]

Looking for the best place to get a drink. Somewhere quiet.

[The man’s voice is low, gravelly, like he’s coasting with three hours of sleep and three pots of coffee. Still, he doesn't sound mean, just tired. Annoyed.]

Someplace with a goddamn pool table and no drinks with cute names. You’d think you could find one but, look at me looking like an asshole. Every place I look is crawling with people looking to take pictures for crap.

[He laughs, and there’s real mirth in the sound. Hey, sometimes if you can’t laugh, you’ll have a nervous breakdown in the parking lot of a 24 hour waffle place.]

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:

Three days into this new…whateverthefuck this is, John has learned that if he wants to keep to the life he’s used to, he’ll need to make changes. That much was clear as soon as he stepped out into the Florida sun and got swarmed by people--women--asking all about his name and his life story. He’s no stranger to hiding out in plain sight, though, and a haircut, hat and a large pair of aviators later and the recognitions happen only when someone get way too close. And usually by then, he doesn’t feel so bad shoving them out of his way or, in a memorable incident at the urinal, breaking their nose.

He finds himself in Maurtia Falls after some brief trial and error, and finds that these are more his people than in any other city he has fast access to. They seem like they could give half a shit that he’s an imPort (christ, he hates that word), and they care even less that he’s trying to pass on the down low.

“Look, buddy,” he entreats to a grimy, local garage owner, “I don’t know how the others work, but I know my way around a car with goddamn wheels. You put me on the payroll, I can do some magic, I swear.”

The man seems to hesitate for a moment, then nods. John smiles for the first time in what feels like months and shakes the man’s hand. Step one on his list to getting back to what he needs to do is complete. First, get a good source of money, a source that isn’t tied to any government that can track his whereabouts. Two, is getting a place to hunker down, and that motel off the main road seems just the right place to plant his ass. Three, now, is start putting out feelers for suspicious deaths. Disappearances. Weird happenings.

He may not be at home, but he’s a hunter. There’s got to be things that need killing here, he’s sure of it.
